Success with Chicken Telethon

Mayor Hector ‘Teto’ Murguía had a good reception now that his campaign has embraced the ”chicken telethon.”

He set his sights quite high, what with 200 thousand packages, to as many families, set for December delivery so they may benefit from a Christmas dinner and start the holiday season off right. For this purpose he recruited functionaries, businessmen and government representatives alike, as well as distributors and syndicate leaders to whom he passed the proverbial pot yesterday on the third floor of the Administrative Offices of the Presidential Municipality.

The potluck was able to collect over 2.8 million pesos cash in donations and in-kind contributions. Gifts contributed spanned a wide range of funds, from the 300 pesos given by Laurita, a maid at the Mayor’s Office, to the 500 thousand pesos given by businessman Pedro Zaragoza, both in answer to the mayor’s call. No one was spared in Polo Canizales’s wide reaching collection efforts, whether they contributed directly or made promises of contributions at a later date. His long arm brought in distributors, businessmen and functionaries alike.

Accordingly, the mayor promised a gift of 100 thousand pesos and Polo, himself, another 20 thousand.

Helping Those in Need in Juarez

At the onset of the campaign titled “En Juarez esta Navidad, ¡Cenamos Todos!” and translated as “This Christmas in Juarez, Dinner for All!”, Mayor Hector Murguía, employees of the Municipality, aldermen, businessmen and average citizens, all contributed thousands of pesos, totaling an initial 2 million 500 thousand pesos, so that the neediest families can benefit from a Christmas Eve dinner this year.

The municipality’s goal is to be able to distribute 200 thousand chickens among the poor this Christmas.

Among the highest donors were Pedro Zaragoza with 500 thousand pesos, Mayor Hector Murguía with 100 thousand pesos and the Chihuahua Group with 150 thousand pesos.

Leopoldo Canizalez, Direction Coordinator, assured us that this ‘vessel’ is at ‘high seas’ but that in spite of ‘rough waters’ it has not ‘sunk’ and, if all of us take up ‘paddles’, it will soon reach ‘friendly ports’. He further stated that it would have the added benefit of empowering the community while reinvigorating the City of Juarez.

In the early stages of the campaign, various directors made personal donations and invited the community to do the same, tapping all nine firefighting stations for the purpose of receiving and delivering in-kind contributions of poultry, beef and other basic food groups so that thousands of families have something to eat the following month during Christmas holiday.

The main task at hand is to not have anyone go hungry or without food this holiday season.

The government launched this program, but there are a myriad of tasks being handled separately. The Treasury is responsible for upholding absolute transparency in the handling of funds in the account.

The Administrative Office will see towards the purchase of the finest products at the best prices and ensure that Social Communication channels and activities flow in a timely manner.

Mayor Murguía underscored the fact that anything less than efficiency is not an option and that one cannot take lightly the sacred-status, benevolence, and well-meaning intentions of the people of Juarez and their goal of 200 thousand chickens for those in need.

Oxxo Presents Donation

The Pedro Zaragoza Vizcarra Foundation received a financial contribution, yesterday morning, in the amount of 751 thousand and 734 pesos, on behalf of the self-service commercial chain OXXO, which itself amassed the sum during a fundraiser whereby patrons of the convenience stores were asked to donate spare cents as part of their purchases in the months of March, April and May.

Verónica Jiménez Montes said that students at 11 educational institutions would benefit from free breakfast meals, with these funds.

Water for All Program with Pedro Zaragoza Vizcarra Foundation

The Junta Municipal de Agua y Saneamiento (Municipal Sewerage and Water Board) announced the launch of its “Water For All” program this week. It will distribute clean drinking water and donate one thousand water tanks each holding 750 liters (approx. 198 gallons) of water.

The purpose of the program is to benefit families who, due to the geographical location of their homes, lack access to clean drinking water and a sewage system.

The local government office issued a statement noting that it will support Fundación Pedro Zaragoza Vizcarra’s program by distributing water and delivering water tanks each holding 200 liters (approx. 53 gallons) to residents of the Bello Horizonte settlement.

In recent days, Fundación Pedro Zaragoza Vizcarra, Leche Lucerna and s (?) joined the Junta Municipal de Agua y Saneamiento (JMAS) (Municipal Sewerage and Water Board) in the distribution of clean drinking water, at no cost, to settlements located in the eastern and western parts of the city lacking access to the local government’s sewerage and water grid.

Verónica Jiménez, director of the foundation, stated that using two of the corporation’s cistern trucks they will distribute water throughout 22 settlements starting next week, as planned. She noted that around 6 thousand families would each benefit from 800 liters (approx. 211 gallons) of water, according to the planned distribution. The foundation will take it upon itself to liaison with the families themselves and manage the social aspect of the program, while Grupo Lucerna and BipGas will supply trucks, salaries for the truck drivers and the transportation of the water itself. She further stated that, during the summer months, high temperatures typically affect all residents of the city, but especially those most vulnerable: children and senior adults of modest means who lack the basic necessity of water in their homes, leading to potential health problems.

Pedro Zaragoza Fuentes Thanks Mayor For Help

In 2006, Mr. Pedro Zaragoza Fuentes publically thanked Mayor Héctor Murguía Lardizábal for his assistance. Mr. Pedro Zaragoza Fuentes and Mr. Jorge Zaragoza Fuentes had requested the mayor’s assistance to find a solution to their dilemma with the country estate that Mr. Pedro Zaragoza Vizcarra had acquired.

In addition, members of the “Comité Procreación Granjas Lomas del Polco, A. C.” (Procreation Committee of Polco Hills Farmland, Civil Association), represented by Mr. Faustino Olivares Nava, also brought the same matter to Mayor Murguía’s attention.

As Pedro Zaragoza Fuentes wrote, “THANK YOU, Mayor HÉCTOR ‘TETO’ MURGUÍA, for your committed and judicious intervention in finding a solution to this longstanding dilemma, which none of the other previous three branches of government were able to resolve with the degree of sensitivity and political will that you and your administration have shown, in full compliance with the Law, while guaranteeing the notion of private property, and saving the heritage of those least fortunate by affording them the benefits of social justice.”

As a result of the mayor’s actions, ten hectares of land were donated to develop a housing complex that included a kindergarten, elementary school, church and commercial strip. As they wrote, “The degree of sensitivity and rapprochement demonstrated by the Mayor towards those least fortunate within our community directly benefits over one hundred families, providing legal certainty to their heritage.”

Opening of the Biointensive Organic Food Unit

Listen to Mayor Hector Murguia Lardizabal discuss the opening of the Biointensive Organic Food Unit at the community center Felipe Angeles El Retiro.  The unit was created in conjunction with the Social Development Secretariat of the Federal Government. He explained that the nursery will benefit families in the community in many ways, as they grow fungus Zeta both for dietary help and for economic assistance.

Veronica Jimenez,  the director of the Pedro Zaragoza Vizcarra Foundation, added that Zeta Mushroom cultivation is very simple and offers great benefits.

Gorbachev Offers Advice to Juárez

Pedro Zaragoza meets Mikhail Gorbachev

One component to ending some of the problems of Juárez is to end iniquitous activities there, advised ex-president of the Soviet Union Michael Gorbachev during a speech he gave while visiting the city.
Gorbachev was in Juárez as a presenter for the program “Competitive Juárez,” a movement which was organized to improve the image of Juárez to the world.
The ex-Soviet president, who was also the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990, said that it is up to young people to solve the problems which are faced by the country. Changes need to be achieved through reforms which are demanded by the people, undertaken by the nation’s leadership, and then given the approval of the people.

The lecture was attended by almost 2,000 people at the Paso del Norte Cultural Center, including Pedro Zaragoza. Everyone in attendance was fascinated to hear how Gorbachev brought his own country from the old system of Soviet communist government to democracy. Gorbachev did not shrink from describing many of the challenges his country still faces today.

Community and Welfare Development in Lomas de Poleo

One of the major needs of the community in Lomas de Poleo is improved water and sewage treatment. Stepping in to help, the Pedro Zaragoza Foundation managed the improvement through the installation of a proper drinking water system as well as a reverse osmosis water storage tank. Additional land was procured in the area for the needed construction of the systems requiring an investment of over ten million pesos for the development of the needed infrastructure.

Thanks to the help and support of the Pedro Zaragoza Foundation, the residents of the community now have the infrastructure in which they can, as homeowners, give to their families the clean water which allows them to live a decent, healthy and dignified life.
